About the Coast Guard Auxiliary

Welcome to the Home Page of Flotilla 43, District 7 of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary.

The United States coast Guard Auxiliary is the civilian component of the United States Coast Guard, and a part of the Coast Guard Forces.

Established by Congress in 1939 as the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve, and later renamed the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, it serves at the direction of the Commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard.  Members of the Coast Guard Auxiliary engage in all Coast Guard activity except military and direct law enforcement involvement.

Coast Guard Auxiliary vessels operating under Coast Guard orders are considered government vessels.  If Coast Guard Personnel are on board an Auxiliary vessel, the auxiliary vessel will display the U.S. Coast Guard Ensign.

Flotilla 43 is a part of the 4th Division, of the 7th District of the U.S.C.G. Auxiliary and was chartered 23 April 1966.  This Flotilla is responsible for providing Safe Boating Education, Vessel safety Checks, and Safety Patrols on the waters  of, and adjacent to, Lake County, Florida.  In addition the Flotilla supports the United States Coast Guard, Auxiliary Air Operations and other Coast Guard Auxiliary unites as requested.

Bill has been in the auxiliary since  for sometime and is AUXOP qualified.  Bill has been serving the flotilla for the past year as the FSO-IS/PE and has performed his duties  in an admirable manner.

The flotilla conducts boating safety classes at various locations in lake county and if you have a boating club we would be willing to hold a class at your location. The ABS (about boating safety) class is an 8 hour class that can be taught in 1 8 hour day or the BS&S (boating safety and seamanship) is a multi day course.

NOAA Announces A New, Nautical Chart Service

     NOAA has posted all 1,000-plus of its U.S. nautical charts on the Internet at www.nauticalcharts.gov/viewer.  They can be viewed using any Internet browser.

     Each chart is up-to-date with the most recent Notices to Mariners.  Use these on-line charts as a ready reference or planning tool.  Then use one of NOAA's printed or digital charts for actual navigation.

Vessel Safety Checks

Flotilla 43, D7, has a group of Auxiliarists who are trained and experienced in providing Vessel Safety Checks for the recreational boating public.  It should be noted that selected members of the U.S. Power Squadrons have also been trained to perform the Vessel Safety Check examination also..  All Vessel Safety Examinations are performed voluntarily, FREE of charge.

Upon satisfactory completion of a Vessel Safety Check examination the inspector will attach a sticker to the port side of the inspected vessel, near the helm, similar to the one pictured above.  Law Enforcement officials may still examine your vessel at any time.

The results of the examinations are not provided to any law enforcement organization. 

Flotilla 43 will arrange for Vessel Safety Check examinations in Lake County, NW Seminole, SW Volusia and the northern part of Orange counties south of Mt. Dora.

Sexual Harassment Policy

Sexual Harassment is a form of sex discrimination that involves unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature when:

1. Submission to such conduct is made either explicitly or implicitly a term or condition of a person's job, pay or career, or

2. Submission to or rejection of such conduct by a person is used as a basis for career or employment decisions affecting that person, or

3. Such conduct interferes with an individual's performance or creates an intimidating, hostile, or offensive environment.

Any person in a supervisory or command position who uses or condones implicit or explicit sexual behavior to control, influence, or affect the career, pay, or job of a military member or civilian employee is engaging in sexual harassment.  Similarly, any military member or civilian employee who makes deliberate or repeated unwelcome verbal comments, gestures, or physical contact of a sexual nature is also engaging in sexual harassment.

Some Types of Sexually Harassing Behavior

Verbal Jokes: Teasing; Pressure for Dates; Jokes

Gossip: Starting and Spreading; Rumors about a person's sexual habits

Physical: Suggestive Notes; Touching; Staring

Written: Blocking; Cartoons; Pornography

Sex Discrimination include:

Employment Decisions: Based on person's gender or sex role stereotypes

Ignoring: Ignoring what is said because of his/her sex

Paternalism: Acting "father like" or "mother like" toward a person of the opposite sex

Clarifying: Speaking for someone because of their sex

Most Common Victims:

Situationally Vulnerable: Junior officers and new members (enlisted); Secretaries and temporaries

Personally Vulnerable: Shy person; Unassertive person

Innocent Bystander: Third party unintentionally subjected to sexually oriented joke or remark

Sex-Role Stereotypes

Men enjoy being sexually harassed

Men cannot be victims of sexual harassment

Women encourage the harasser
